Paper by Daniel Churchill in latest edition of Ed Tech March/April 07. represents a good summary of Web 2 environments, particulary liked the statement that: despite the debate on what it represents at least the Web2 notion offers a good metaphor that signifies a number of novel technological possiblities that have emerged on the Internet. He talks of the nature of the concept in terms of the social networking possiblities -producing the familiar figures for patricipants of these systems eg Youtube attracting 25 million hits per year etc. But like so many pieces he does not analyse the real engagement here-hit data is not a good indicator of auser activity. And how many are actually contributing to these sites ? I cited somedwhere recently (Pew?) that YouTube only had .16% of people coming to the site actually contributing. I thnk Wikipeadia also has similarly low ratios. Getting to the nub of the paper though on Ed Web2 technologies he cites two main studies: Richardson 2006, suggests five main ways thses can be used in the classroom:
- Assessment (porfolios) classroom applications.
- Internet mediated tools social learning spaces
- new modles and methods for designing learning objects, and other rsources (mashups)
- new models of resource sharing (YouTube etc)
- New generation of LMS or non at all using modular conentand services.
On this last point its a pity he didn’t mention LAMs.
Churchill goes onto discuss two studies he is engaged in: using blogs to to support teaching and learning (in a HEC course and social spaces and repositories for teachers. The use of blogs he finding that it is useful for reflection and negotion between student and teacher (faciliator blog links to that of students). tasks are shared and commented on. His second study intends to investigate the creation of repository services [and this is the bit I like] based on Web 2. Such a system will facilliate storing, sharing, catalog resources. “a repository based on Web 2 should in many ways different and conceptually more advanced than other learning object repositories” .
The now traditional appraoches to LO repositories needs challenging. This is something we are hoping to unpack on the TaLe project. While there is a need for formal repository services, there is a growing swell of resources out there which we need to harness quickly at the grassroots level.
Churcill goes on “The sharing of resources is not the primary purpose for the existance of a social networking space . resources are a kind of “carrot and stick’ to bring teachers into a community tha is willing to co-exist and contribute”. And that is what we should be about on TaLe.
