School based social networking

Another significant survey on social networking- this one from NSBA (US) -gives us some more insights of teenage usage:

  • 71 percent say they use social networking tools at least weekly.
  • Almost 60 percent of students who use social networking talk about education topics online surprisingly, more than 50 percent talk specifically about schoolwork.
  • District leaders are skeptical at this point about the educational value of social networking.Parents, on the other hand, have higher expectations.More than three in four (76 percent) expect social networking to help.
  • School district leaders seem to believe that negative experiences with social networking are more common than students and parents report.

What similar surveys have/are being undertaken locally? Annual surveys such as this are important to monitor a highly significant social/educational phenomena.
