An great presentation today with the CEO of Desire2Learn John Baker. Always wary of inviting vendors in the doors of a public education organisation (esp when they sniff the size of NSW). But any company fresh from doing battle with WebCT – would be worth a listen. John and the Aust office were refreshing in that they genuinely seemed interested in education above the corporate motive (maybe I’m being green here). But not only was their product suite a nice blend  of VLE and PLE concepts, it also did more than lipservice to standards compliance. Their business model seemed to fit somewhere between proprietary approaches and opensource. Research partnerships to user build the products was fundamental.  Perhaps this is new hybrid appraoch for many corporates?  I was also impressed when John mentioned their collaborations with Stephen Downes and the National Research Council of Canada (brought back nice memories of Moncton). Mention was also made of Susan Metros’s work with D2D in the HE sector.
